2 pilots hospitalized after small plane crash in Jamestown
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) – Two men were taken to the hospital following a small plane crash at the Jamestown Airport just after 10 a.m. Monday, Chautauqua County officials announced.
Officials said a pilot and his co-pilot were coming from Dunkirk in a Cessna Citation X that crashed at 10:12 a.m. near the airport’s main runway.
Both pilots walked out of the plane after the crash, said PJ Wendel, the Chautauqua County Executive. The pilot was flown to ECMC and the co-pilot was “alert and conscious” and taken to UPMC Chautauqua, Wendel said.
Shannon Fischer, Chautauqua County’s manager of airports, said the pilot sustained facial injuries. No further details were provided on the statuses of the pilots.
Officials said they believe the pilots lost electricity and were not able to make any mayday calls.
The airport’s crash truck was the first on the scene to fight the fire, with multiple fire departments and ambulances responding afterwards, said Noel Guttman, the Chautauqua County fire coordinator. No firefighters were injured in the response.
The fire was not burning on the runway itself and no structural damage was done to the runway, officials said.
“They did land short in the grass, about 200 feet short of the runway, but then they kept it straight onto the runway and veered off at the end,” Fischer said. “They did what they could.”
Photos from witnesses on scene showed thick, black smoke billowing into the air. The Falconer Fire Department posted photos of the wreckage.
The Chautauqua County/Jamestown Airport does not currently have commercial flights.
The NTSB will come out to the scene and Fischer said she believes the FAA will tell them when they can reopen.
The airport will remain closed until further notice.
This was the second small plane crash at the airport in as many years. Last June, two men were killed when their plane crashed shortly after takeoff, landing in a wooded area within the airport grounds.
