St. George leaders looking for transfer of sale tax revenue
ST. GEORGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The new leaders of St. George are wasting little time requesting sales tax revenue from East Baton Rouge Parish.
The request came as new City of St. George officers were officially sworn in Monday evening. Five new members were appointed to the new transition district for St. George.
The two percent sales tax was signed into law back in 2020. It allows the collection of the sales tax. The money from that tax will be used for city services, including trash collection.
“We believe all along that a great St George makes a great East Baton Rouge Parish and we can work together. We just need to start that process and move forward together,” said Andrew Murrell with the St. George Transition District.
“Collected in the boundaries of St George and the remitted to the city for the running of its municipality, which is the same that it does for the cities of Baker, Zachary, and Central,” said Chris Rials, treasurer with the St. George Transition District.
Murrell also says the sales tax goes in hand with the property taxes that go towards operating the entire city’s services.
