St. Martinville Police Department gets higher starting salary for officers

ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (KLFY) — New officers at the St. Martinville Police Department will now be receiving a starting salary of more than $47,000, according to the St. Martinville police chief.

This salary bump comes after the St. Martinville City Council approved a 10% pay increase for the department, which includes state supplemental pay. The previous starting salary was about $44,000.

St. Martinville Police Chief Ricky Martin said the department is trying to recruit as many officers as possible because the department is currently understaffed.

“The staffing issues just multiplies because what happens is when we are shorthanded the guys have to work more hours, so it starts to build up on them, they start getting the wear and tear on their bodies, mentally and physically, what we do is not an easy job,” Martin said.

He said officers currently employed at the department are hardworking and diligent.

“The guys that are here already, they come out and they give 100% in their best interest with the best intentions for the city, so I think doing a pay raise amongst other things definitely builds up morale,” Martin said.

Martin said that while the department could use some improvements, the department aims to be more attentive and fair to its employees.

“Nobody’s perfect, we have issues just like everybody else, but we try to be consistent on fixing the issues we have and listening to our employees and try to keep it fair across the board,” Martin said.

The pay increase will go into effect next pay period, said Martin.

To apply, call the department at 337-394-3001 or email [email protected].
