State’s Attorney Kim Foxx allegedly assaulted, hit in face with ‘brown liquid’

FLOSSMOOR, Ill. — Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx was the victim of assault when she had a “brown liquid from a drink cup” thrown into her face last week, according to police and court documents obtained by WGN.

A Flossmoor man, William Swetz, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery in connection with the alleged Friday attack.

According to the felony complaint, Foxx was on the 800 block of Sterling Avenue in the south suburb when Swetz, 34, driving a GMC truck, “tossed a brown liquid substance from a drink cup onto the face of the victim.” Swetz also put the truck in reverse and drove “towards the victim” prompting Foxx to step out of the way “due to her fear of being struck,” the documents said.

Foxx, 52, was first elected in 2016 and held onto the post after the 2020 election. She announced last year that she would not seek a third term. Her eight years prosecuting crime in her hometown have included intense scrutiny of her efforts to overhaul criminal prosecutions and her approach to high-profile cases, including charges against actor Jussie Smollett for staging a racist, homophobic attack against himself.

Looking to succeed Foxx are Eileen O’Neill Burke, a Democrat and retired appellate judge, and Bob Fioretti, the former Chicago alderman who served as a Democrat but is running as a Republican.
