Steve Coogan lands next TV role in returning Netflix series
Steve Coogan has joined the star-studded cast of The Sandman as it returns for a second series on Netflix.
Based on the comic book by Neil Gaiman, the series came to our screens in 2022, becoming an instant hit and being renewed for a second season three months after its premiere on the streaming service.
Now, the I'm Alan Partridge star has joined the cast as Barnabas, the canine companion of the Endless's Prodigal brother, according to Tudum.
Barnabas is described as "loyal and loving, but an outspoken cynic. Meaning, he's both man's best friend and man's sharpest critic".

He joins a whole host of new names, including Slow Horses' Freddie Fox, Game of Thrones' Jack Gleeson and Clive Russell, The Nevers' Ann Skelly and Douglas Booth, alongside returning cast members Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Ferdinand Kingsley, Stephen Fry, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Vanesu Samunyai and Razane Jammal.
The news was announced on the 35th anniversary of the acclaimed comic book series, with creators revealing who will star as Endless family members Destiny, Delirium, and The Prodigal.
The three siblings were missing from season one, while we did get to meet Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and Despair (Donna Preston).
Hustle star Adrian Lester will take on the role of Destiny, while Hanna's Esmé Creed-Miles will play Delirium and Revenge's Barry Sloane as The Prodigal.

Showrunner Allan Heinberg also gave fans a taste of what they can expect from the second series, picking up after Dream and his companions faced off against Lucifer's (Gwendoline Christie) creatures of hell.
"In the next chapter of The Sandman, the King of Dreams will come face-to-face — and go toe-to-toe — with the formidable rulers of Hell, Asgard, Faerie, and the realms beyond," he told Tudum.
Gaiman penned a lengthy message to fans last year announcing production had begun on the latest series, and reflecting on the milestone Sandman had reached.
"This week we officially restart production on the next sequence of stories of The Sandman for Netflix," he wrote. "Genius showrunner Allan Heinberg and the countless people in front of and behind the camera are building something endlessly special, and bringing these stories to life in a way that would once have been unimaginable."
The Sandman season 1 is available to stream on Netflix, while season 2 is yet to receive a release date.
