Storm shelters to open across Southeast Louisiana due to Tropical Storm Francine

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Preparations for Tropical Storm Francine are underway in Southeast Louisiana.

WGNO meteorologists report that Francine is set to make landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday.

As residents grab those last-minute groceries, fill up their gas tanks and grab sandbags, some parishes are opening shelters for those in need of a place to whether the storm.

Terrebonne Parish

In Terrebonne Parish, a storm shelter will open on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Parish officials said residents should bring a driver’s license or state identification card, bedding, personal hygiene products, medication, baby formula, diapers, wipes, power strips, phone chargers and enough food and water to last three days.

  • Municipal Auditorium: 880 Verret Street.

St. James Parish

St. James Parish officials announced that two shelters will be open at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

  • West Bank Reception Hall: 2455 Highway 18, Vacherie, La. 70090

  • East Bank: Lutcher Senior Center at 2631 Louisiana Ave., Lutcher, La. 70071

Lafourche Parish

Lafourche Parish officials said a shelter will be open as mandatory evacuations begin for different areas of the parish. Parish leaders said residents are advised to bring enough food, water medicine and bedding for at least three days, as well as charging cables for portable devices.

  • Lockport Community Center: 5610 LA-1 Lockport, La. 70374

Jefferson Parish

Jefferson Parish leaders said those in mobile homes and trailers are advised to seek an alternative shelter in a sturdy building during the storm. Parish officials said a shelter in Terrytown will open at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

  • Terrytown Playground: 641 Heritage Ave., Terrytown, La. 70056

St. John the Baptist Parish

St. John the Baptist Parish leaders announced that two shelters will be open on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 8 a.m. Parish officials said residents should bring their own food, water and medications.

  • East St. John Preparatory School: 200 Ory Drive, LaPlace, La. 70068

  • West St. john High School Gymnasium: 480 LA-3127, Edgard, La. 70049

Transportation will be available until 10 a.m. for those unable to get to the shelter. Residents who need assistance should call 985-652-6338 or 985-652-2222.

St. Charles Parish

St. Charles Parish leaders announced that a “shelter of last resort” will open in Luling on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 a.m. Parish officials said residents in need should bring blankets, pillows, snacks, water and medications. Pets are allowed. However, dogs must be leashed, and cats must be kenneled. Parish leaders said those bringing pets should bring food bowls, medications and medical records.

  • Edward A. Dufresne Community Center: 274 Judge Edward Dufresne Parkway, Luling, La.

Tangipahoa Parish

Tangipahoa Parish officials said “shelters of last resort” opened on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at three locations across the parish.

  • Restoration Church: 22494 U.S. 190, Robert, La.

  • Amite Community Center: 212 E. Oak St., Amite, La.

  • Brown’s Chapel: 70427 Martin Luther King Drive, La.

Plaquemines Parish

Plaquemines Parish leaders announced that a temporary shelter is open for residents in need of a place to stay during the storm. Parish officials said residents should bring all essentials, medications and personal items needed. Small pets are allowed. Residents in need of transportation to the shelter can call 504-934-6940.

  • Multi-Purpose Center (Brown Building): 333 F Edward Hebert Blvd.

Hancock County

Officials with the Hancock County Emergency Management Agency announced that a shelter will open in Kiln, Mississippi, on Tuesday, Sept. 10, starting at 7 p.m. Emergency management officials said residents should bring bedding, medications, personal hygiene products, drinks and snacks.

  • Kiln Shelter: 18320 Highway 43, Kiln, Mississippi
