Stranger Things' Winona Ryder has shared that she “cried” after her co-stars couldn’t identify an album from its cover.

The star, who plays Joyce Byers on the Netflix show, is shooting for the fifth and final season of the series, which is due to air next year.

In an interview with Esquire, Ryder recalled a particularly excruciating moment from production on the first season, sharing that her younger co-stars – Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo – were nonplussed when she held up a pivotal album from her childhood.

"I cried," she recalled. "I just think that social media has changed everything, and I know I sound old. I'm very aware of that. And part of me thinks, 'Gosh, am I like vaudeville at this point?' Like: 'Hey, kids, turn down the music!'

"I just think there was such an abundance: the history of film, the history of photography, it's so rich, and there's so much there, and I don’t mean we should go backwards, but I wish and I hope that the younger generation will study that."

The interview came on the press tour for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which sees Ryder reprise her role as Lydia Deetz. This time, Lydia has a husband and daughter – played by Justin Theroux and Jenna Ortega, respectively – as she encounters the titular character (played by Michael Keaton) for the first time in over 35 years.

Keaton, who is also joined in the cast by Catherine O'Hara and Monica Bellucci, recently teased details of the eagerly anticipated sequel, saying that Tim Burton's latest film improves upon elements from its predecessor.

"[It has] a stronger story," he began. "There's more of a connection for the audience in terms of the other characters. There's things in here that I wasn't ready for, that are beyond delightful. Instead of saying, 'I can't wait until this thing shows up,' or, 'I just want this thing called Beetlejuice to go nuts.'"

Stranger Things seasons 1-4 are streaming on Netflix. A fifth and final season is in production. Stranger Things: The First Shadow is now booking until February 2025 at the Phoenix Theatre in London. Tickets are available now. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is released in cinemas on September 6.
