Summer basketball games aim to keep Baton Rouge kids away from crime
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge event with basketball games and fun is part of a summer initiative to reduce crime in the city.
Late Night Hype is an event series held at BREC Gus Young Park in partnership with Empower 225, BREC and Safe Hopeful Healthy BR. It features 5-on-5 basketball games, art, food, music, and activities designed to enhance mental health, spiritual well-being and overall enjoyment.
The series kicked off in April and has one last event from 7-11 p.m. Friday, July 26.
It’s part of the Summer of Hope, a community-led initiative bringing events directly to neighborhoods and families that have experienced violence.
Jacquise Terry, one of the organizers of the event series, said those nighttime hours were chosen based on statistics that show that’s when crimes are most likely to happen.

“We want to create an alternative environment so if our young men and young ladies want to out from 7-11 we wanted to create another atmosphere that has peace, that has fun and fellowship and has collective joy so that if they are out on those times they can be in a safe environment,” Terry said.
