Summer program helps Albuquerque students prepare for next school year
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A special summer program in Albuquerque is helping some students prepare for the next school year. Horizons Albuquerque is helping low-income students in grades first through 11 with the goal of advancing educational equity.
“This program is really important because many of the students we work with fall behind during the summer, and this is an opportunity for them to continue their academics through the summer and prepare for the next grade level,” said Tracy Herrera, executive director of Horizons Albuquerque.

Students not only focus on academics, but also learn skills like guitar playing, robotics, and how to swim. “Every student has a little bit of a different take on what’s really exciting to them, but there is a broad range of opportunities for our students,” Herrera said.
Students also get to spend time outdoors. In one case, they helped collect data about turtles in the bosque to help the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish with its research.
Educators told KRQE News 13 that they are happy to see how students have grown throughout the years. Since 2014, the student population of Horizons Albuquerque has quadrupled, with 200 students enrolled this year
