Despite more than a year having passed since the show came to an end, it’s looking like Ted Lasso season 4 could be heading our way sooner rather than later.

Even before the feel-good footy hit closed out its third and (supposedly) final season, show star Jason Sudeikis was already keeping his options open regarding more time on the field, saying the powers that be had “set the table” nicely for a host of different outcomes.

Co-created by Scrubs mastermind Bill Lawrence and loosely inspired by a character Sudeikis first debuted during NBC sports coverage back in 2013, the series follows the eponymous coach as he’s transported from the world of American college football to British Premier League soccer.

The show’s last episode aired on Apple TV+ in May 2023 but new reports suggest that more episodes could be on the way.

According to Deadline, Ted Lasso season 4 is becoming increasingly more likely. While the show has not yet received a green light, its primary cast have been approached about returning, with Hannah Waddingham potentially returning as AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Walton, Brett Goldstein back as hot-heased former player Roy Kent Roy Kent and Jeremy Swift appearing as director of football operations Leslie Higgins once more.

If these three are secured, the same outlet reports that feelers will be sent out to other key Ted Lasso players both in front and behind the screen, with an eye to enter production in early 2025.

The same report suggests that all of this comes with the blessing of Sudeikis, who created the show with Lawrence and Joe Kelly based on a pre-existing character that he had already developed. Sudeikis’s original plan was for Ted Lasso to run for just three seasons but it looks like its runaway success and multiple Emmy wins has convinced him to return to the pitch.

Deadline also reports that Juno Temple is also being approached to return as model-turned-PR-pro Keeley Jones, with Brendan Hunt in discussions to reprise his role as Coach Beard.

Released during the height of the pandemic in 2020, Ted Lasso became a quick hit welcomed by viewers from both America and the UK largely thanks to its heartwarming storylines and Lasso’s perpetually upbeat attitude.

Its word-of-mouth success was solidified following a successful stint at the 2021 Emmy Awards where the show walked away with a host of gongs, including outstanding comedy series, best supporting actress for star Waddingham and best actor for Sudeikis — a prize he won again in 2022.

Before the news about a possible season 4, Sudeikis had already made a few promising comments about delivering more Ted Lasso in the future.

“I mean, there’s always Cameo, right?” joked the former Saturday Night Live cast member while speaking to Deadline and making reference to the popular app that lets you request personalised video messages from your favourite actors and pop-culture characters.

“This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell. The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet — that being season 3 — it’s flattering.”

Meanwhile, Sudeikis' co-stars have each become fan-favourites in their own right. As such, the Ted Lasso actor appears unwilling to rule out the idea of future spin-off series.

“I think that we’ve set the table for all sorts of folks…to get to watch the further telling of these stories,” he told the outlet while keeping things intriguingly vague.

“Again, I can’t help but take the question as flattery for what all of us that were working on the show has tried to do. It’s really kind of folks to even consider that because you never know what’s gonna happen when you make things. The fact that people want more, even if it’s a different avenue is lovely.”
