The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says a caller reported a teenage boy was shot near a house on Northeast Excelsior Street.
The boy was taken to the hospital, where he died. Investigators believe a drive-by shooting happened in a neighborhood. The boy’s identity was not revealed.
They describe the vehicle as a dark blue or black 1996 to 1998 Chevy Silverado 4-by-4 Z-71.
One of the headlights on the truck is out. You can see a video of the truck in the video player above.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says, per their stats, this marks the first homicide in the history of the City of Avondale.
“I heard about 6 shots, went looked out the window, saw a kid stumbling around in the street collapsed up against a telephone pole,” witness Eric McCool said.
McCool witnessed the carnage through his window before calling the police and racing to the teen’s aid, but there was little he could do.
“I’ve never seen anything like that up close before,” McCool said.

Deputies believe this was a targeted attack and have already begun the process of piecing this chaos together. Not only did they release that video, but they’re also working to identify the parties involved.
No matter the circumstance, the incident has brought fear to a community that has never seen a homicide in their town.
“We were already pretty alarmed, my wife and I,” said neighbor Brian Woods.
“We don’t go out after dark, we don’t go to the entertainment districts…Now it’s come close to home and that’s a little bit scary.”
“It also shows us that violence can happen anywhere and it can affect people at any time” Sarah Boyd, a spokesperson with Clay County Sheriff’s Department said.
The metro squad has been activated. It’s a team of investigators made up of different agencies from across the metro. The collaboration allows the squad to put more resources towards the investigation in a shorter amount of time, as those critical 48 hours are key.
