Temperatures plummet as fall-like storm moves into Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Tuesday, Utah! We’ve seen a major weather pattern shift following our windy work week starting with wet weather and a big fall when it comes to daytime highs today.

Bottom Line? A strong cold front and storm system is on the move ushering in wet weather for the northern half of the state and cooler, below-average temperatures overall.

A broad storm system is tracking through Utah and it’s brought a soggy start for some.  We are seeing cooler temperatures and continued showers, especially in northern Utah with the best chances for wet weather north of I-80 and focused on the Wasatch Front and Wasatch Back. The cold front passage will bring organized precipitation, and scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible as the storm system lifts out of the region by the evening.

Even though the Autumn equinox is not until Sunday morning, we will feel like Autumn today with daytime highs dipping 10-15 degrees below average for this time of year. For perspective, the average high this time of year in Salt Lake is 81 degrees and in St. George is 93 degrees.

Temperatures today will only make it into the upper 60s and low 70s along the Wasatch Front and in northern Utah, while southern Utah will see highs in the 70s as well with highs near 78 degrees for St. George. With colder air in place, we could see our first mountain snow of the season above 9000 feet. The High Uintas and upper peaks of the Wasatch may get a dusting to a couple of inches Tuesday, and it’s yet another reminder the season change is around the corner.

We quiet a little bit into the midweek, but temperatures will stay below average, and we don’t eliminate the chance of wet weather. By Wednesday, we will be paying attention to a second, weakening low developing along the Pacific Coast.

As it tracks inland, we see potential rising for another chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in Northern and Western Utah. Another storm system could impact the weekend, but it’s too early to nail that down, but we will see our below-average temperatures lingering.
