Tennessee Voices, Episode 301: Peter Buckley, chancellor, UT Health Science Center
The vibrancy of Memphis and the reputation of University of Tennessee Health Science Center attracted Dr. Peter Buckley, the school's chancellor since Feb. 1.
A psychiatrist by training and profession, Buckley has been a clinical and academic leader for many years.
On this episode of the Tennessee Voices video podcast, Buckley and I talked about a variety of issues from the mental health crisis facing the nation to the dichotomy between high-quality health care centers and poor overall population health outcomes in the state.
We also discussed rural health disparities, dental health and partnerships with institutions such as Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
Buckley an Ireland native, is also an avid music lover.
In June, I went to the campus near downtown to moderate a gubernatorial candidate forum in partnership with the UT System. Prior to the emergence of COVID, I was invited to be a guest lecturer at UTHSC on issues such as confronting medical misinformation.
This is an issue that has taken greater importance in the era of COVID and monkeypox, which has now been declared a national emergency.
Buckley and I discussed the impact that social media has on disseminatingand how health professionals may be able to help.
