Tennessee Voices video podcast engages state leaders, thinkers and innovators | Plazas
The state and municipal stay-at-home orders of 2020 meant there were no in-person debates to moderate, events to attend or community meetings.
That is a significant part of my role as an engagement editor, but just like so many other people living through the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to adapt to doing my job from home using technology.
The time and tools gave me the opportunity finally to launch a project that I have been thinking about for some time: A video conversation series with interesting people across the state who are leaders, creators, thinkers and innovators.
Thus, on March 24, 2020, the Tennessee Voices videocast launched, building on the name The Tennessean historically gave guest columns, also known as op-eds.
We publish an average of 100 op-eds a month. So, why not tap into this archive of material? Why not ask the authors via video conferencing to tell us for about 20 minutes what they are working on and thinking about?
Meanwhile, I also ask them to talk about how they are coping in this era and what new books, shows or movies they are watching and recommend to viewers.
Patrick Ryan, a retired Naval intelligence officer and the president of the Tennessee World Affairs Council, agreed to be my first guest and he offered his expertise on how nations are handling the pandemic.
Other guests have included conservative U.S. senators, reproductive rights advocates, educators, business leaders and health care entrepreneurs.
On April 11, 2024, we published our 400th episode, featuring a conversation with Rebecca Price, public historian at the Nashville Public Library.
