The Diplomat season 2 is making its way to Netflix, with new episodes set to drop later this year.

Created by Homeland and The West Wing writer Debora Cahn, this political thriller stars Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell in a story that mixes political tensions with relationship struggles.

In the show’s first outing, audiences were kept on the edge of their seats as the newly appointed US ambassador to the UK, Kate Wyler (Russell), tried to figure out who was behind a deadly attack. If she succeeds, she can avoid all-out war. However, the deeper she digs, the more shocking things get.

With The Diplomat season 2, Wyler will be faced with a new set of challenges, both professional and personal. Here’s what we know about the return of Cahn’s show…

The Diplomat season 2 will drop on Netflix on Thursday, 31 October.

The new season will consist of six episodes, making it two episodes lighter than its first outing. Each will be available to stream on the day of its release.

A short teaser for The Diplomat season 2 marked the show’s return — and the introduction of Allison Janney’s vice president Grace Penn.

Without giving too much away, the 50-second trailer showed Wyatt’s character Wyler hitting the red carpet with her politician husband, played by Sewell where she meets her new boss.

Wyler spent The Diplomat season 1 in London, trying to figure out who was behind a deadly attack on a British airline carrier. It was a job that required her to make allies and enemies from a variety of different nations but it was all for a good cause because if she succeeded, she could avoid war.

While this mystery was being cracked, her relationship with her husband, politician and fellow diplomat Hal (Sewell) was at breaking point due to the nature of their respective day jobs.

By the time the dust settled on the show’s first season, Cahn had served up a shocker of a twist ending when it was revealed that the attack was carried out by British prime minister Nicol Trowbridge.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, a second explosion hit before the finale ended, one that could leave a number of key players — including Wyler’s husband — critically injured or even dead.

According to Cahn, season 2 finds our heroine trying to pick up the pieces.

“Season 1 ended with Kate’s (Keri Russell) realisation that the attack on a British warship [that] brought her to the UK wasn’t the work of a hostile nation — it was the British prime minister,” Cahn told Netflix. “Now she has to prove it.”

She added: “The US and the UK don’t spy on each other… In fact, they share all their intelligence. So how do you investigate the PM? Who do you trust?”

Then there’s the fallout from the deadly explosion to contend with.

“Kate’s colleagues and her almost-ex-husband are victims of a politically motivated attack in London that takes some lives and shatters the rest,” added Cahn. “The marriage she thought was over, the relationship she thought was beginning … all of it, in pieces.”
