Shruggie is all up in this health care debate. (Via Twitter)
Thursday afternoon, an emoticon known as shruggie made a guest appearance in the Capitol during a presentation by newly minted Internet hero and Democratic Sen. Christopher Murphy.
Murphy used the beloved Internet symbol to illustrate a point about a fight over health insurance currently taking place in a Supreme Court case, King v. Burwell. If the conservative activists who brought the suit forward win, it could eliminate Obamacare subsidies that millions of Americans currently rely on. Congress could dodge this drastic outcome if it amended just one phrase in the Affordable Care Act, but Republicans don’t want to do that. And they also don’t want to disagree with the conservative activists. As for what will happen to those millions of Americans without the subsidies, hey, you know how it goes… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Probably the only good thing to come of this whole fight is the advancement of a famous meme, which was promptly hyped by Twitter.
Now that our U.S. government has acknowledged shruggie, we patiently await the appearance of an eggplant emoji.
