The One Show has been taken off air this week in a schedule shake-up, but why?

The magazine-style show - which includes a mix of news, human interest stories and celebrity interviews - usually airs on weekdays at 7pm. Hosted by a rotating carousel of presenters including Alex Jones, Jermaine Jenas and Roman Kemp, it is a real staple on BBC One.

However, it was not on the schedule for Monday night and will be gone for a whole week. So what’s happened? And when will The One Show return to our screens?

The One Show off air due to sports coverage

The programme has been taken off air as the BBC moves things around to accommodate sports coverage. Wimbledon started on 1 July and many viewers are keen to see as much action as possible from the court.

Plus the Euros are ongoing, with interest heightened even further now that England has made it to the quarter-finals after a tense match against Slovakia.

The One Show has been moved from its usual slot before. It sometimes shifts to BBC Two to make way for sporting events or for debates in the run up to the general election. But with the schedule as crowded as it is currently, bosses evidently decided to take it off air altogether this week.

Last year and the year before, The One Show moved to BBC Two where possible during Wimbledon fortnight. But when there is no space for it due to something else, it does take a break.

In 2023 for example, the programme didn't air one night when BBC One was showing Wimbledon and BBC Two was showing BBC Proms at the same time.

What's on this week instead?

On Monday, The Bidding Room was screened in the 7pm slot - with the football following at 7.30pm and the tennis was on Two. On Tuesday, BBC One will show the Romania v Netherlands match from 4.30pm until 7.15pm, with the rest of the time slot on both channels being filled by Wimbledon and the news.

The tennis championship will continue to take centre stage on BBC One for the rest of the week. On Wednesday and Thursday BBC Two will air two episodes of EastEnders, which has also been disrupted because of the sports broadcasts, from 7pm. On Friday, BBC One and BBC Two will both be focused on tennis and football around 7pm.

When will The One Show be back?

Host Alex Jones previously told viewers that the programme would return on Monday July 8. It will be on at 7pm as usual, but will be on BBC Two instead of BBC One. The episode will be hosted by Jones and Lauren Laverne.
