Theresa May's 9 most awkward moments
Many politicians are known for their silver-tongues, the ability to ooze charm and almost-too-smooth manner. So perhaps it could be considered almost refreshing that Theresa May possesses none of these things.
That said, her calamitous conference speech, this week, was not actually her fault - with hecklers, coughing fits and crumbling stage signs conspiring against her.
But the Prime Minister is no stranger to awkward gaffes. Remember the France v England friendly football match earlier this year, when the PM attempted to join in a Mexican Wave that was sweeping the crowd? Her poorly timed effort drew criticism and hilarity on social media, while French president Emmanuel Macron and home secretary Amber Rudd looked on in bemusement.
Here are Mrs May's most awkward moments...
1. #SpeechGate
From the heckler waving a P45 to her coughing fit, the 'F' falling off the wall behind her and Amber Rudd having to strong-arm Boris Johnson in standing up to applaud the PM's efforts, this was the awkward speech to end them all.
No wonder she appeared to have a wobbly bottom lip when her husband, Philip, rushed on stage for a hug.
2. The Mexican Wave
"How can Theresa May lead Britain if she can't even do the Mexican wave properly? What a mess," wrote one Twitter user.
"Theresa May also put more effort into that Mexican wave than she did for her entire election campaign," added another.
3. Lonely in Brussels
The entire nation cringed when this video emerged in December last year, showing May being awkwardly excluded from salutations at the EU summit. The Prime Minister appears to be being ignored by other attendees and a video shows her fidgeting, while her European counterparts greet each other warmly.
But being socially awkward is a British custom, right?
4. The wrong car
We've all been there - you're walking along quite happily, when you suddenly realise that you are heading the wrong way. So you stop in the middle of the pavement, check your watch or phone, sigh exasperatedly (as if technology were to blame), before changing direction.
Or if you're Theresa May almost getting into the wrong car, the the day before moving into Downing Street in July last year, you smile and wave to the press before walking briskly away.
5. Chipgate
Look, we all know that having to eat in public is every politician's worst nightmare. But did Theresa May have to look quite so terrified by a single chip while on the election campaign trail in Cornwall?
It even prompted a Twitter response from #baconsandwichgate Ed Miliband himself, which read simply: '@theresa_may we should talk...'
6. The Trump grip
Who among us didn't feel a pang of sympathy when President Trump gripped the Prime Minister's hand as they walked through the White House grounds in January this year.
Trump is known for his fear of slopes but onlookers suggested that the May didn't look entirely comfortable when the US President patted the back of her hand.
7. That laugh
In politics, you're only ever one awkward moment away from going viral. When Theresa May laughed at something Jeremy Corbyn said during PMQs in March this year, she probably didn't expect to become a meme...
8. Field of nightmares
One of the most awkward moments of the election campaign, was when ITV's Julie Etchingham asked the Prime Minister to reveal the 'naughtiest thing' she'd ever done. After a fair amount of flapping, Theresa May dropped the bombshell that, as a child, she had run through fields of wheat as a child, to the displeasure of local farmers.
#Awks.
9. Bingate
Ah The One Show, renowned for delving deep into the political issues that the country really cares about. Like who takes the bins out at Number 10? This attempt to appeal to the 'ordinary' electorate was screamingly awkward. Nor did it work.
