Mike Pence was Trump's vice president during his first term in office
In 2016, Trump selected then Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate. The two had a falling out when Pence fulfilled his Constitutional duty to certify the 2020 presidential election on Jan. 6, 2021 when insurrectionists attacked the U.S. Capitol, some threatening to hang Pence.
USA TODAY reported in May that at least six contenders for the former president's running mate – Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.; Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio; Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.; Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y.; South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem; and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum – attended a series of fundraisers in Florida with Trump as auditions for the post.
