Thruway maintenance worker hit and killed on I-90
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A New York State Thruway Authority maintenance worker was hit and killed on I-90 in Chautauqua County Monday morning, New York State Police announced.
According to State Police, the worker, 58-year-old Thruway Maintenance Supervisor Stephen Ebling of Eden, N.Y., was hit and killed by a vehicle traveling west toward exit 58 in Hanover. Troopers determined the collision was fatal around 8 a.m. Monday upon arriving on-scene.
On Tuesday, NYSP said their investigation determined that Ebling ran from in front of a NYS Thruway vehicle on the shoulder of the road into the passing lane of I-90, in an attempt to avoid being hit by a Honda that had traveled over the hazard markings toward the Thruway vehicle.
The Honda, driven by 20-year-old Ohio resident Jacob Carr, had corrected back into the left lane, where it ultimately struck Ebling. Police said Carr was cooperative throughout the investigation, which remains ongoing.
I-90 West was closed for multiple hours due to the accident, but reopened around 11:15 a.m.
In a statement, Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her sympathies to the family, friends and co-workers of the victim.
“Roadside workers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of all drivers on the road and they deserve our utmost attention at all times,” she said. “This is the second fatality involving a Thruway maintenance worker this year and it is a serious reminder to slow down, safely move over and be alert for all vehicles stopped on the side of the road.”
