Tickets go on sale Friday to see Patty Griffin and Todd Snider at the Washington Center
American singer-songwriters Patty Griffin and Todd Snider will play at the Washington Center on Oct. 28, the center announced this week.
Griffin, who is based in Austin, Texas, has won two Grammy awards — best folk album for her album, “Patty Griffin” in 2020, and best traditional gospel album for “Downtown Church” in 2011. She has been nominated five other times.
In 2016, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rounds of radiation treatment damaged her voice, but she decided to re-enter the music scene with a new focus perspective on songwriting. Her self-titled album was a reflection of that change, she told PBS in March 2019.
“There was definitely a reality check for me. There’s lots of them as you get older. But this one was very specific: You will not be getting out of here alive, by the way,” she told PBS. “That sharpened, I think, my writing a little bit more, and to sort of sitting down and figuring out where you are now, and writing truthfully from that point.”
Todd Snider, who lives in Nashville, Tennessee but was born in Oregon, is another singer-songwriter known for his combinations of folk, rock, blues, alt country and funk.
Snider, who struggled with addiction to painkillers and opiates after a divorce in 2014, came back in 2019 with “Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3.” In 2021, he was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
“I just went down into that hole. It was just a hard time, so I took hard drugs, and got through it,” Snider told Rolling Stone in March 2019. “It’s embarrassing, but actually, it’s not. It’s just the way of life. I’m not the first. Won’t be the last. I wouldn’t trade the music life for anything. Even at rock bottom, I love it.”
Tickets to see the singer-songwriters start at $39. Sales will open to the public at noon Friday at the box office at 512 Washington St. SE in Olympia or on the Washington Center website.
