Tim Walz, JD Vance Agree to October Vice Presidential Debate on CBS
Vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and JD Vance have agreed to debate each other at least once this fall, with both men accepting a Tuesday, Oct. 1 invitation from CBS News.
Minnesota Governor Walz — who was announced as Kamala Harris’ running mate in the 2024 presidential election earlier this month — was first to agree to the CBS-hosted debate. On Wednesday, shortly after CBS News announced that four potential debate dates had been offered to the vice presidential candidates, Walz wrote in an X post, “See you on October 1, JD.”

Vance, a Republican senator from Ohio who joined Donald Trump’s campaign in July, then agreed to the Oct. 1 event via X on Thursday, writing, “The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three of them already. Not only do I accept the CBS debate on October 1st, I accept the CNN debate on September 18th as well. I look forward to seeing you at both!”
A CNN spokesperson confirmed to TVLine that both Vance and Walz have been invited to a debate hosted by the network “this fall,” and Vance has thus far accepted.
“We are always in communication with the campaigns around opportunities for the American public to hear from leading candidates for President and Vice President of the United States, and we look forward to this programming in the fall,” CNN’s statement reads.
CBS News’ October debate will take place in New York City, but a time has yet to be announced. CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell and Face the Nation moderator Margaret Brennan will serve as moderators.
Trump and Harris, meanwhile, will face off in their first debate on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 9/8c. ABC News’ David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate; a location has not been confirmed.
Election Day this year is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
