TOPEKA (KSNT) – The clock is ticking for the winner of a Powerball prize valued at $1 million through the Kansas Lottery.

Purchasing a lucky ticket valued at $1 million is usually a cause for celebration. However, the winner of one such prize in the Sunflower State is running out of time to claim the winnings as a September deadline approaches.

Cory Thone with the Kansas Lottery told 27 News in a written statement that winners of Powerball prizes like this have one calendar year to collect their money. For this prize, the largest currently sitting unclaimed in Kansas, the deadline is fast approaching on Sept. 27, 2024.

Per Kansas Lottery policy, if the prize money is still unclaimed by that date, it will be put back into the prize pool for use in future winnings. Thone is hoping to raise awareness about the prize before the deadline passes.

“It is unusual for a prize of this size to go unclaimed,” Thone said. “It is not uncommon for a player to wait several months before claiming their prize, so we have our fingers crossed that they are just biding their time!”

If claimed before Sept. 27, the prize will amount to $710,000 after the 5% state tax and 24% federal tax on the cash. The winning numbers for the prize were 1-7-46-47-63 with a Powerball of 7. The south-central region where the ticket was purchased include the following counties:

  • Barton

  • Rice

  • McPherson

  • Marion

  • Stafford

  • Reno

  • Harvey

  • Pratt

  • Kingman

  • Sedgwick

  • Butler

  • Barber
