Tony Pollard, Tony Allen headline speakers at Memphis mental health summit
Memphis native and Tennessee Titans running back Tony Pollard will be one of the speakers at the Bend Dxnt Break Athletes Summit on Saturday afternoon at Hope Church .
The event, held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., will also feature former Memphis Grizzlies guard Tony Allen and Memphis rapper Project Pat. Mental health clinicians and services will also be on hand.
Jeff Trotter, president and CEO of the Bend Dxnt Break Foundation, said the event will be geared toward impacting youth but is inclusive to all.
"The city of Memphis has been traumatized to say the least," Trotter told the Commercial Appeal. "From Eliza Fletcher, Ezekiel Kelly, to the shooting most recently in Orange Mound Park. If we aren't going to change the gun laws, we can at least invest in the mental fortitude of the individuals behind the guns. Something has to change."
The summit is a two-day event that begins Friday, but will be headlined by the celebrity guests on Saturday.
"Healthier individuals should create a healthier society," Trotter said. "I believe it starts with the youth because the future of our city will one day be in their hands."
