Trump highlights Cruz endorsement amid tight Texas Senate race
Former President Trump highlighted his endorsement of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in Truth Social posts early Tuesday morning, ahead of the senator’s lone debate with Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas).
“Ted is one of the strongest Senators in the Country on Border Security, whereas his Opponent, Colin Allred, is a Radical Open Border Extremist, who will put our Country, and Safety, LAST. Ted, on the other hand, will ALWAYS put Texas, and America, FIRST,” the former president said in one of his posts.
“Ted Cruz has my Complete and Total Endorsement – HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!” Trump added.
Cruz’s Senate reelection battle is one of a handful of races that could determine who controls the Senate next year. He is leading Allred by 2.7 points, according to an average of Texas polls from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ.
“While I have Endorsed Ted, on numerous occasions, verbally, because of the Importance of the Race, and Ted’s Importance to the future of our Country, I thought the Endorsement should be memorialized in writing,” Trump said in a later Truth Social post.
Democrats have cause for optimism as Allred heads into the home stretch of his uphill battle to take out Cruz.
The Cook Political Report earlier this month shifted Texas’s Senate race from “likely Republican” to “lean Republican,” signaling momentum for Allred.
“Anybody that says, ‘It just doesn’t happen in Texas’ — it doesn’t happen until it does,” pollster Brett Loyd told The Hill last month, of the possibility Allred scores an upset.
Allred and Cruz are set to debate at 7 p.m. CDT Tuesday at the WFAA Studios in Dallas.
The Hill has reached out to the Allred campaign.
