Trump: The media treats me worse than any politician in history
President Trump complained Wednesday that the press has treated him more unfairly than any other politician in history.
Trump made this claim while delivering the commencement address to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Class of 2017.
“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media. No politician in history — and I say this with great surety — has been treated worse or more unfairly,” he told the graduates in New London, Conn.
Trump was imparting life advice about how “things are not always fair” and that “things happen to you that you do not deserve.”
The president’s comments were the first public statements he has made since the New York Times published a ground-shaking report alleging that Trump had asked then FBI Director James Comey to intervene in the investigation of his former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. He also encouraged Comey to consider bringing charges against journalists who publish classified information, according to the report.
“You can’t let them get you down. You can’t let the critics and the naysayers get in the way of your dreams,” Trump told the graduates, drawing applause. “I guess that’s why I won.”
Trump said that adversity makes one stronger, and he encouraged the students to never back down or stop doing what they know is right. He said opposition mounts in relation to how righteous one’s fight is.
“I’ve accomplished a tremendous amount in a very short time as president,” Trump said, before going on to outline a series of actions that he considers accomplishments in relation to his campaign promises to slash environmental regulations, support veterans, protect the Second Amendment, build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and restructure U.S. health care.
He said the American people understand why he has taken certain actions — even if it confounds and outrages the press.
“I didn’t get elected to serve the Washington media or special interests,” Trump said. “I got elected to serve the forgotten men and women of our country, and that’s what I’m doing.”
Former President Barack Obama’s speechwriter Jon Favreau was not impressed that Trump was complaining about unfair media treatment while addressing the Coast Guard graduates.
“Commander-in-Chief whines about his hard life to a class that has volunteered to risk their lives for their country,” Favreau tweeted. “He’s a pathetic child.”
Dan Pfeiffer, the former senior advisor to Obama, chimed in with, “Is incurable narcissism grounds for removal under the 25th Amendment?”
Others pointed out that many other politicians throughout history have been killed as result of popular uprisings or assassinations, though Trump’s complaint was primarily directed at the press.
“Mussolini was shot dead and hung upside down in public. Nicolae Ceau?escu and his wife were executed. But you have been treated worse,” one person wrote on Twitter.
