Tuesday night vigil planned for man killed by Columbus, Ohio, police

Family, friends, and activists will hold a community vigil Tuesday night for the man who was shot and killed by five Ohio police officers earlier in the day.

Family identified the victim as Samuel Sharpe Jr., who was known as Jehovah by many in the neighborhood.

The vigil will take place at 8 p.m. at the intersection of North 17th and West Vliet streets, the northwest corner of King Park.

The shooting occurred near North 14th and West Vliet Streets just under a mile from the security perimeter for the Republican National Convention.

Residents who came to the scene were critical of out-of-state police's involvement.

Vaun Mayes, a prominent community activist, said he was concerned with the plan to bring non-Milwaukee police from “red states” who may not be familiar with Milwaukee communities.

He did not think the shooting would’ve happened if it had been Milwaukee police.

Mayes is familiar with the neighborhood from his work and dealing with its homeless population. He has successfully de-escalated fights in the area, he said.

Milwaukee Law enforcement has blocked off an area three by two blocks including all of King Park in response to fatal shooting. There are more than 100 police on scene, in squads, on horseback, on bikes and on foot.
