Ukraine, Gaza wars cast shadow over Putin's BRICS summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded the BRICS summit yesterday. But while the meeting of 36 countries aims to advance financial cooperation, it was partly overshadowed by the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

BRICS final day: At the summit, U.N. Secretary General António Guterres called for “a just peace” in Ukraine, Gaza and other areas of conflict. Putin welcomed the idea of peace, but he neither confirmed nor denied North Korean troops were in Russia when asked. [AP]

In the Middle East: In the coming days, talks are set to resume in Qatar regarding a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal. Israel said it would participate, but it’s unclear whether Hamas will do the same. [BBC]

3 QUESTIONS

...about the World Series

The 2024 MLB World Series begins tonight. I asked Jordan Shusterman, co-host of the Yahoo Sports Baseball Bar-B-Cast podcast, what to expect.

Divya: Set this up for me: How does the World Series work?

Jordan: Sure! Here’s a rundown: The winners of the American League (Yankees) and National League (Dodgers) meet in a best-of-seven series. The team with the better record gets to host Games 1 and 2 as well as Games 6 and 7, if necessary.

Divya: What can their matchup in the regular season tell us about how this series will unfold?

Jordan: The Dodgers won two of three games in New York in early June, but both teams’ rosters have changed since then. Also, Yankees slugger Juan Soto — whose dramatic home run against the Guardians got New York to this point — didn’t play then. He should play a pivotal role now.

Divya: Which players should I keep an eye on?

Jordan: Definitely Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge. They’re expected to be their respective leagues’ MVPs, and we haven’t seen two presumptive MVPs face off in a World Series since 2012. I’m looking at how they perform on the game’s biggest stage, where neither has played before.
