CNN commentator Van Lathan had an emotional response to Donald Trump being declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election. Speaking on the network Wednesday morning (Nov. 6) the 56-year-old became choked up when discussing the results and the potential impact of the Republican victory.

“I’m thinking about the people who are not part of anybody’s elite, who are hurting tonight,” he reflected. “There are African-American women who know a little bit about being talked down to. They know about having their economic dreams crushed. They tried to dream a big dream over the last couple of months. Tonight, they are trading in a lot of hope for a lot of hurt.”

The 2022 Nelson Mandela Changemaker Award recipient continued, “They were hoping that maybe this time, this time, one of their own could be seen as worthy. And, once again, they are facing rejection, and that hurts. They thought tomorrow morning they are going to walk out with their shoulders back a little bit. Maybe be able to breathe for the first time, and belong someplace.”

With one day left before the general election, Trump is campaigning for re-election in the battleground states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Jones continued to describe, “It’s not the elites who are going to pay the price. It’s the people who woke up this morning with a dream and are going to bed with a nightmare. Those people will pay the price for whatever Donald Trump decides to do.”

Fox News was next to call the race for Trump after noting his win in Pennsylvania at 1:46 a.m.

Networks including CNN and MSNBC did not label Trump victorious until after 5:30 a.m., after the Republican nominee gained Wisconsin’s electoral votes.
