Vera star Brenda Blethyn has revealed she feels "emotional" after the show reached a milestone.

ITV recently confirmed that the hit detective series will return for a 14th and final season, which will consist of two feature-length episodes – lasting 120 minutes each.

Blethyn, who has starred as DCI Vera Stanhope for 13 seasons, has now revealed that filming on the final season has finished.

"Travelling home after finishing filming of Series 14 of VERA. Tired and emotional," she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Fans quickly took to the comments section to express their sadness at the show ending, with one writing: "Looking forward to series 14 but I am really going to miss Vera."

Another added: "Vera is that rare and special series that I can watch over and over again & still enjoy it every time. I'm looking forward to watching the new series but so sad it's the last. Hats off to you & the whole cast."

A third echoed the sentiment: "Oh wow, the end of an era. Looking forward to the final series but tinged with sadness. Thank you for the care with which you translated Vera from the books to the screen. It has also been a great tourism boost for the North East."

The news comes after Blethyn's co-star Riley Jones, who plays DC Mark Edwards, opened up about his reaction to filming his final scenes on the series.

"Heading up to Newcastle to film my last few scenes for Vera," he wrote on X/Twitter, adding: "Weird that someone is chopping onions on the train."

Based on the bestselling books by author Ann Cleeves, the first season of Vera aired in May 2011, with Blethyn originating the detective role in her trademark trench coat and hat.

The show returned for season 13 in January 2024, with three feature-length episodes that saw DCI Stanhope tackle more mysterious cases across the northeast.

Shortly after the episodes aired, Blethyn announced her departure from the series.

"Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end, and I'm sad to be saying Cheerio," she previously said in a statement. "But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years."

Vera seasons 1-13 are available to stream on ITVX.
