Video shows moments before, after NW 21st shooting

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Surveillance video obtained by KOIN 6 News shows the moments before and after a shooting in Northwest Portland Sunday evening left two people wounded and dozens of restaurant goers huddled in the back of a popular eatery.

The incident at NW 21st and Glisan unfolded shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday. The surveillance video, taken by a business on NW 21st, shows a black truck turning from NW Glisan as a man — holding what appears to be two bags of cans — tries to cross the street.

In the video, the man seems to strike the truck’s window, gesture and continue on. Moments later, another man marches from the direction of the truck follows to where the altercation broke out. Bystanders are seen filming the incident as the assumed driver returns back toward NW Hoyt.

The gunfire captured in a second surveillance video was taken after the initial confrontation. An innocent bystander, seen on the street in the first surveillance video, appears to be shot in the leg and limps to a nearby table.

Two people were wounded, one was taken to the hospital, police said. Both are expected to recover.

“All of a sudden we start hearing this male voice say, ‘Get down, get down, get away from the windows, get back to the kitchen, get to the back.’ And then at the same time, I’m hearing this pop-pop-pop,” said Jennifer Sobolewski, who was having dinner at the Blue Moon Tavern and Grill with her sister, Sally Carter.

“And so, immediately everybody jumped down and we all kind of went into a train down to the back” of the restaurant, Carter said.

Late Monday night, police announced a suspect in the shooting, James T. Rennick, turned himself into officers at the Central Precinct. The 46-year-old Portland resident was booked at the Multnomah County Jail and will likely face charges of attempted murder, second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

The shooting is one of 522 in the city this year, Portland police said. But that number is more than 300 fewer shootings at this point in the city in 2023. Data shows the number of deadly shootings and people killed also steadily declined in the city, with homicides falling from 54 at this point one year ago to 44 so far this year.
