Wallner, Lee, Lewis add big hits, Twins edge Angels

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (KELO) — Matt Wallner homered, while Brooks Lee and Royce Lewis added key doubles in the Twins 6-4 win over the Angels Wednesday night.

A first and third inning homerun for the Angels helped them grab an early 2-1 lead.

Wallner’s long ball was the loan score for Minnesota through three innings.

Willi Castro changed that in the fourth with an RBI single. Castro would be doubled in, along with Trevor Larnach as Brooks Lee gave the Twins their first lead at 4-2.

That lead was narrowed to 4-3 in the seventh.

The Twins got two runners on and no outs. Wallner and Jose Miranda struck out. Carlos Santana was intentionally walked for Lewis… and he delivered.

Royce snapped a long hitless streak earlier in the game and this time, he smoked a grand slam just over the fence in left field, until review.

The official review overturned Lewis’ homerun, making it a two RBI double. The Twins led 6-3 at that point.

Griffin Jax was brilliant in two innings of relief. He faced the minimum striking out three and allowing just one walk.

The Angels scored one run off Jhoan Duran in the ninth inning.

THE RECORD

The win improved the Twins record to 78-68.

The Guardians beat the White Sox Wednesday, meaning Cleveland still leads the Twins by six games.

Kansas City suffered a 4-3 setback to the Yankees. Minnesota is now just 1.5 games back of the Royals for second place in both the AL Central and AL Wild Card.

Minnesota remains three games ahead of the Tigers and four in front of the Red Sox.

UP NEXT

Minnesota has a day off Thursday, before they open a three games series at home against the Reds.

Probable starters for Friday are Bailey Ober (3.77 ERA) for the Twins and Julian Aguiar (5.06 ERA) for the Reds.
