Walt Ehmer, Waffle House President And CEO, Dead At 58
Walt Ehmer, the CEO and President of Waffle House, has died at the age of 58 after succumbing to an unspecified illness, according to a statement from the restaurant chain.
“It is with sadness that we inform you that our Chairman, Walt Ehmer, passed away today following a long illness. He will be greatly missed by his entire Waffle House family,” reads a statement obtained by Atlanta News First. “We will share more details in the coming days, including highlights of Walt’s 30+ year career at Waffle House. For now, we know all of you join us in extending our deepest condolences to Walt’s family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Ehmer was also on the board of trustees for the Atlanta Police Foundation, which announced his death Saturday (Sept. 7).
“Walt was a dedicated leader, tireless advocate for public safety, and an unwavering supporter of our mission to build a safer, stronger Atlanta,” the foundation wrote via Facebook. “His passion for community service and steadfast commitment to improving the lives of others will leave a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Condolences were also sent from Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who wrote, “I am saddened to learn of the passing of Walt Ehmer, the CEO of Waffle House and a proud Georgia Tech alumnus. His leadership, dedication and warmth touched the lives of many, both within the Waffle House family and beyond. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy. My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. May they find comfort in his enduring impact and the lasting mark he made on so many.”
Ehmer began at Waffle House in 1992, rising through the ranks to become president by 2002, The Daily News reports. He’d later rise to chairman and CEO. The respected Atlanta figure has been the face of Waffle House since the passing of founders Joe Rogers and Tom Forkner in 2017.
