Want to indulge this Valentine's Day? Find your way to this whimsical Savannah chocolate shop
Although the artistry with which Adam Turoni crafts his chocolates make them almost ― almost ― too beautiful to eat, it's the sly wit behind their design and flavor combinations that make them deliciously indulgent. His new creations for Valentine's Day are no exception.
The splatter-painted Screw Love Truffle, replete with plastic screw, is a heart-shaped case blended from milk chocolate and 74% single-origin Dominican Republic dark chocolate filled with raspberry jam and a surprise burst of Pop Rocks ― a throwback to when Shaun Cassidy graced the cover of Tiger Beat and love seemed so simple.
That confection is one among 12 truffles tucked inside a silver puzzle of a "Lovers Box" for Cupid's annual celebration.
The iridescent lip-shaped Berry's Kiss truffle offers the push-me-pull-you contrast of creamy fruit mousse with the crunch of freeze-dried strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. White chocolate and raspberry caramel roses are dusted with raspberry powder and hold their own against any dozen long-stemmed varieties. The Strawberry and Rose truffle has a hint of smokiness because the jam inside is infused with fire-roasted strawberries. Tuxedo-adorned Perfect Date caramels have an exotic coconut marshmallow fluff at their core.
One of the most versatile offerings for this season of love is a clear box holding two geodesic hearts dusted in gold. The box comes with a small wooden mallet to smash open the hearts like festive pi?atas, revealing everything from shiny dragees and sprinkles to coco-dusted hazlenuts. Their versatility allows them to serve as an adventure for two lovers or a way to smash the patriarchy for a gathering of Galentines.
The whimsy matches the "Alice in Wonderland meets Marie Antionette" origin story of Chocolat by Adam Turoni's three storefronts, all envisioned by Turoni and his business partners Daniel Taylor and Alexandra Trujillo de Taylor as welcoming rooms in a stately manor. The Broughton Street shop is an abundant dining room. Bull Street encompasses a library, and the Charleston outpost is a elegant orangerie. Each space is an interactive experience, where guests are invited to fill trays with truffles as they browse.
The shops are open seven days a week at 10 a.m. Online orders are welcome and take two-three days to fulfill. The final day to order Valentine's chocolates online is Sunday, Feb. 11. Local pickup is available.
