Watch: Clouds swirled amid Ashtabula tornado warning

AUSTINBURG, Ohio (WJW) — Dark, swirling clouds were seen above Austinburg while a tornado warning was in effect for Ashtabula County on Wednesday afternoon.

Karson Gildersleeve said he captured video (seen above) at 1:30 p.m., which was 15 minutes before the warning expired.

“What we saw in the clouds earlier today, in the storm that passed through Ashtabula, was rotation,” said FOX 8 meteorologist Dontaé Jones. “This is the rotating of winds that we pick up on radar. Sometimes that rotation can form a funnel cloud, which in turn can form a tornado. Luckily in this case, it was only rotation and no reports of funnels or tornadoes.”

The National Weather Service issued the warning at about 1 p.m., after locating a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado about 8 miles southeast of Ashtabula, moving east at 20 mph.

It was expected to move over rural areas of northeastern Ashtabula, including Kelloggsville, Plymouth Center, Pierpont and Edgewood, according to the service.

Southwestern Erie County and northwestern Crawford County in Pennsylvania were also included in the warnings.
