The longest day of the year in Cleveland occurs on the summer solstice. This year, that was on June 20 and there were 15 hours and 11 minutes of daylight.

It happens when one of Earth’s poles is tilted toward the sun at its most extreme angle. Because of the Earth’s tilt, this happens twice a year during the summer and winter solstice.

This year, the autumnal equinox will happen on Sept. 22 at 8:44 a.m., which marks the official start of fall in the northern hemisphere and the start of spring in the southern hemisphere.

Meteorological fall however starts on Sunday, Sept. 1.
