Winter Wonderland: Michelle Obama Dazzles in Monique Lhuillier

Each year, the Kennedy Center honors five individuals who have made a mark on American culture. Actors, musicians, dancers, and writers, join the President and First Lady in celebrating their achievements during a night filled with special performances. This year, the honorees included actor Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride, singers Sting and Al Green, and comedienne Lily Tomlin. Lady Gaga was there too, in a long white dress with a matching cape, to pay homage to Sting via a performance of “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,” but it was Michelle Obama who stole everyone’s attention in a lace gown by Monique Lhuillier, guaranteed to land herself a spot on the week’s best-dressed list.

The silver dress, featuring a sweetheart neckline with an embroidered mesh overlay, was a bit of a departure for Obama, who favors rich jewel tones for her formal appearances. Luckily, it proved to be a risk well taken. The glitter effect felt just right for the holidays, and her slick-backed hair, oversized earrings, and frosty make-up assured her look remained classic and modern—much like the woman herself.
