Wisconsin driver with BAC of .18 blames GPS for driving on railroad tracks, arrested for 2nd OWI

MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – Officers in southern Wisconsin arrested a driver for a second OWI offense after they blamed their GPS directions as a reason for driving on railroad tracks.

While Madison Police officers were engaged in a proactive OWI enforcement operation near East Washington Avenue on Friday night around 11:20 p.m., they noticed a vehicle that was reportedly stuck on nearby railroad tracks.

The driver had gotten stuck on the tracks that intersect with East Washington Avenue after officers say they were allegedly driving on the tracks as if they were a roadway “for a short distance.”

Officers reported that the driver allegedly appeared confused and intoxicated. The driver reportedly told officers that they “were simply following directions” from their GPS navigation device.

It was noted that the driver was found to have a BAC of .18, which is more than twice the legal limit. They were subsequently arrested for a second OWI Offense.
