Wisconsin officer identified in fatal shooting of armed suspect during critical incident

FITCHBURG, Wis. (WFRV) — Authorities in southern Wisconsin have released details regarding a critical incident that occurred on Aug. 12, 2024, involving an officer-involved shooting.

The officer from the Fitchburg Police Department who shot the suspect, identified as Kevin D. Price, is Officer Peter Johnston, who has 14 years of law enforcement experience.

Around 8:00 a.m. on that day, Fitchburg police responded to a residence on the 800 block of Whispering Pines Way following a 911 call about a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers were approached by a witness who reported a physical altercation between two individuals and directed them to the residence where the altercation was taking place.

After confirming the ongoing disturbance, officers entered the home. Inside, they encountered Price, who was armed with a knife. Price allegedly approached the officers despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, leading Officer Johnston to fire his weapon.

Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and transported Price to a nearby hospital, where he died two days later from his injuries.

Law enforcement personnel involved in the incident were wearing body cameras, and Officer Johnston is currently on administrative leave, in accordance with agency policies.
