UPDATE: Champaign Police confirm one person shot, critically hurt on Market Street

Update at 5:50 p.m.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department has confirmed that a police response on Market Street was the result of a shooting that left the victim in critical condition.

Department officials said officers responded to the area of University Avenue and Market Street for a report of a shooting at 3:19 p.m. They found a 45-year-old man from Broadlands at the scene; he had been shot in the torso and the wound is considered life-threatening.

One person is under arrest in connection to the shooting: 24-year-old Fidele Tshimanga of Urbana. Officials said their investigation indicated that Tshimanga approached the victim, pulled out a gun and opened fire before leaving the scene. Tshimanga was still near the scene when officers arrived; he was taken into custody and officers recovered a gun.

Tshimanga was booked into the Champaign County jail on preliminary charges that include aggravated battery with a firearm.

Although an arrest has been made, the Champaign Police Department is still investigating the shooting. Anyone who has additional information or video footage recorded near the scene is asked to contact the CPD by calling 217-351-4545 or Campaign County Crime Stoppers by calling 217-373-8477.

All tips submitted to Crime Stoppers are both anonymous and eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,500 for an arrest in felony cases involving guns.


Update: 5:20 p.m.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Pour Bros. has announced via Facebook that, due to “circumstances beyond our control,” the taproom will be closed for the remainder of the night.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Several witnesses have spoken with our reporters at the scene.

Those witnesses said they saw two people taken from the scene – one in an ambulance on a stretcher and the other in handcuffs, accompanied by Champaign Police officers.

Police have not confirmed any details about what happened.
