Woman who claimed child had cancer faces multiple felony charges in Noble County

NOBLE COUNTY ? A Noble County grand jury has indicted a Pleasant City woman on multiple felony charges after she admitted to law enforcement she exaggerated and fabricated a child's medical conditions to receive monetary donations.

Pamela Reed, 41, has been indicted on charges of telecommunications fraud, a third-degree felony; endangering children, a third-degree felony; grand theft, a fourth-degree felony; two counts of forgery, fourth-degree felonies; and six counts of forgery, fifth-degree felonies.

She originally was charged with theft by deception, a fourth-degree felony, after accepting donations on behalf of a child who supposedly had cancer. She was taken into custody by the Noble County Sheriff's Office on Jan. 8 and bond was set at $50,000. Records do not show a court date has been set.

Reed made statements about the condition of a child who she portrayed as having cancer and promoted fundraisers to benefit the child. An investigation by the sheriff's office and Noble County Children's Services revealed the child did not have cancer.

The sheriff's office said it and the Noble County Children's Services received information on Jan. 4 about a child who has been publicly portrayed to be fighting cancer.

An investigation conducted by Sheriff Jason Mackie, his staff and children's services revealed the child did not have cancer.

Several area organizations participated in fundraising efforts and made monetary contributions to offset medical expenses for the child. One organization donated $8,000.
