Woman shot and killed by deputy while investigating potential break-in near Springfield

A woman was shot and killed in a home in the 2800 block of Hoover Avenue while Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputies were investigating a possible break-in early Saturday morning.

Sangamon County spokesman Jeff Willhite Saturday confirmed the shots were fired by sheriff's deputies. He did not confirm that the shots were fired in the home.

A news release said that deputies reported shots had been fired at approximately 1:21 a.m., about 30 minutes after two deputies responded to the 911 call to the home.

The home is in an unincorporated area, confirmed Sheriff Jack Campbell.

The woman, whose age and identity have not been released, was taken by ambulance to HSHS St. John's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Deputies administered first aid to the woman before an EMS crew arrived, according to the release.

It wasn't immediately known if deputies thought the woman was the intruder or if other individuals were present.

It is also unclear as of Sunday morning if the woman who was shot and killed was armed or not.

There were no other injuries reported.

The sheriff’s office requested the Illinois State Police conduct an independent investigation into the matter.

Trooper Rodger Goines, a spokesperson for ISP, said the investigation was ongoing and it wasn't releasing any further details yet.
