Workers at Milk-Bone plant in Buffalo go on strike, call for fair contract
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Workers at the Milk-Bone plant on Urban Street in Buffalo went on strike Monday and are calling for a fair contract, BCTGM Local 36G, the union representing the 165 workers, announced on its website.
BCTGM, which represents workers in bakery, confectionery, tobacco and grain milling industries, initiated an “unfair labor practices” strike against J.M. Smucker Co. in Buffalo, the owner of the dog biscuit company, Milk-Bone.
The union said it’s negotiating for lower health care costs, better wages and more respect for both the law and its employees.
During negotiations, BCTGM said in its announcement that J.M. Smucker Co. illegally threatened and intimidated union members and their families. It claimed that the company also used regressive bargaining tactics.
Roger Miller, the vice president of BCTGM, announced that they tried to avoid a strike. He also said charges are being filed with the National Labor Relations Board for the company’s alleged actions.
WIVB News 4 reached out to both J.M. Smucker Co. and BCTGM for comment, but have yet to hear back.
