MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Mid-South mother is speaking out after her son was shot while closing up a local Zaxby’s restaurant.
For Katina Glover, the past few days have been a nightmare. Her son, 26-year-old Jeremy, was shot while leaving work Sunday night.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Jeremy, who is the manager at the Zaxby’s Houston Levee location, was shot in both legs during an attempted carjacking.
Glover says she spoke to her son just moments before the shooting. “He was like, ‘Mom, I’ll call you back when I get off’. That’s just a standard routine for us — for him to call me. I worry so much because he closes up.”
Reports say as Jeremy was walking to his car after closing, a dark-colored Dodge Challenger parked behind him.

The suspect reportedly approached Jeremy’s window and told him to get out of the car. However, as he was opening his car door, the suspect opened fire and took off empty-handed.
An off-duty EMT and a Memphis Firefighter jumped in after the shooting to help.
“People think when you’ve been shot there’s some motive behind it. So, for this young man, Mr. Hill, to save my son, that means everything to me,” said Glover.
She says Jeremy has a long road to recovery. They would usually go walking as a way to spend time together, but since he’s been shot in both legs, he can’t engage in that activity with her anymore.
Glover says her son has been with Zaxby’s for 10 years. She says the company has reached out and offered support, but she wants to see action.
“I guess a lot of these restaurants don’t believe in security — even if you paid for an hour or two at the end of the shift to make sure your managers or whoever is closing up are protected,” Glover said.
Glover says she’s happy her son is still alive, but this encounter has been a learning lesson. “This is an eye-opener for everyone to see that it doesn’t matter how well you raise your child or how good of a person you are. If someone out there wants to hurt someone, it can happen.”
Zaxby’s released a statement on Thursday regarding the incident.
“We, Memphis Foods, LLC (dba Zaxbys) are cooperating with local law enforcement after the incident on July 7 at our Cordova, TN location. The safety and well-being of our team members is a top priority. The team member is in stable condition, and the restaurant remains open and fully operational at this time. At the moment, we are not able to comment further as this is an ongoing investigation.“
