New York City police officer accused of shooting Voorhees man in road-rage incident

VOORHEES — A New York City police officer is accused of shooting a motorist in a road-rage incident here.

Hieu Tran, 27, of Yonkers, allegedly shot a 30-year-old Voorhees man on the night of May 17, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

The victim remains hospitalized, the prosecutor's office said Friday.

Police found the wounded man at an accident scene at Route 73 and Cooper Road around 11:15 p.m., said an account from the prosecutor's office.

A criminal complaint alleges Tran fired into the victim's truck after both men had stopped at a red light.

The wounded man then accelerated through the red light into oncoming traffic, striking another vehicle and seriously injuring its female driver.

A white SUV fled the scene.

Surveillance video showed the SUV traveled to a gas station in Mount Laurel, where the driver purchased gasoline with Tran's credit card, according to a probable cause statement.

Detectives linked three 9mm casings to Tran's department-issued firearm, the statement says.

Cell-phone records also showed "the location of Tran's phone was consistent with the route of the white SUV," it adds.

Tran was arrested Thursday in New York.

He waived extradition and was being held in Camden County Jail, pending a pretrial detention hearing.

"This investigation is active and ongoing," the prosecutor's office said Friday.

Tran is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and a weapons offense.

The charges are only allegations. Tran has not been convicted in the case.

A representative of New York's police department could not be reached for immediate comment.
