Mandy Moore especially misses ex-boyfriend Adam Goldstein, known professionally as DJ AM, every year on Aug. 28.

A decade ago, Goldstein died on that date at the age of 36 from what was determined to be an overdose of cocaine and prescription drugs.

The This Is Us actress dated Goldstein for several months in 2007 and 2008, and the two remained friends throughout his life.

About a year before Goldstein died, on Sept. 19, 2008, he and Blink-182 member Travis Barker were the sole survivors in the crash of a private plane that left four others dead. Although Moore and Goldstein were no longer a couple at that point, she went to be with him at the Georgia hospital where he was being treated.

Goldstein was a former drug addict who had been sober for 10 years before the crash. After his death, friends told the Los Angeles Times that Goldstein struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and survivor’s guilt.

“[All] I know at that time is that it shook him up badly and it was hard for him to express what happened in his own words,” rapper Mickey Avalon told the newspaper. “From experience, depression is one of the hardest things to avoid when dealing with a death of someone close to you or perhaps faced with your own mortality.”

Moore has shared similar tributes in the past.

When Goldstein died, Moore said in a statement to Access Hollywood that she was “absolutely heartbroken.”

“For those of us lucky enough to have known him, Adam radiated a contagious exuberance for life and also personified the very definition of a true friend,” Moore said. “To say that he will be missed beyond words is an understatement. My heart goes out to his loved ones.”
