It looks like Selena Gomez has just lost her Instagram crown. The singer/actress, who’s held the title as Instagram’s most-followed user since 2016, has been officially dethroned by soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo has been trailing Gomez closely for quite some time, but this morning he was finally able to surpass her on the platform. At publication, he has 144,327,117 followers, while Selena has 144,316,079 followers.
The drop comes a month after the Selena declared she would be taking a social media break and reportedly sought mental health treatment. The 26-year-old hasn’t been active on Instagram since September 23; meanwhile, Ronaldo — who is currently facing sexual assault allegations — shared two new posts on the platform just today.

Considering Gomez's complicated relationship with social media, we’re sure she's not too upset by the loss. She previously opened up to Elle about her feelings on Instagram and why she doesn’t have the app on her personal phone. (Her assistant posts to her account on her behalf.)
“I’m not on the internet,” she said. “I haven’t been on the internet in months. I don’t have my password for Instagram.”
She continued, “The reason why is, it’s not real to me. I know my voice is very prominent, but I’m not careless with it. I’m selective.”
Regardless of how the Selena feels about Instagram, it will be very interesting to see what happens when she makes her return to the platform. Time will only tell if Cristiano’s soccer fans are a match for her Selenators.
