Who is Kristen Stewart dating? History of partners from Pattinson to present
Kristen Stewart is part of a power trio in the new “Charlie’s Angels” film, but off-screen her relationship status has continued to fascinate.
Her fans became extraordinary invested during the “Twilight” era as it became clear that the love between Bella and Edward, played by Robert Pattinson, went beyond the pages of the script. And, of course, the demise of “Robsten,” amid her affair with married director Rupert Sanders, only shone a brighter spotlight on her love life. (A pre-presidential Donald Trump was obsessed.) Not that it’s stopped Stewart from following her heart as she’s romanced some artists, a model and other beautiful women over the last five years. That’s brought her to a romance with screenwriter Dylan Meyer, whom she said she wants to make “movies and kids” with.
While Stewart, 29, was once hesitant discussing her relationships and sexuality, she’s certainly evolved. She was living “out,” but made it very official in her opening monologue on “Saturday Night Live” in 2017, when she declared herself as “so gay.” Stewart, who doesn’t identify as a lesbian or bisexual and eschews labels, recently explained that she realized “in protecting” her personal life, “I was ruining it. Like what, you can’t go outside with who you’re with? You can’t talk about it in an interview?” She went on to say that she likes that the world is “getting to a place where ... we’re all becoming incredibly ambiguous. And it’s this really gorgeous thing."
As soon as the “Charlie’s Angels” trailer hit — she plays Sabina Wilson — social media had high hopes that her character would be gay, but that’s TBD until Nov. 15, when the reboot hits theaters. When she returned to “Saturday Night Live” last weekend to host for the second time, she portrayed a pansexual character.
To keep up with Stewart’s personal evolution, we trace her romantic path — from present to Pattinson.
Dylan Meyer, August to present
In August, Stewart was “papped” during a sidewalk makeout session in New York City with the “XOXO” screenwriter, whom she met six years ago but became romantic with recently. The women have since been hanging out on both coasts — including attending karate class together — and even headed up north to the Toronto International Film Festival.
Stewart addressed their romance for the first time during a dishy interview with Howard Stern on Nov. 5. While discussing the possibly of getting married in the future, Stewart said she would "absolutely" propose, saying she has “a couple of plans” in mind already.
Clearly smitten, Stewart revealed she told Meyer that she loved her just two weeks after they started dating. But the connection was instantaneous. “It was literally like the day that I met her, all bets were off,” she gushed.
A more candid-than-ever Stewart continued, "I want to make movies and kids with this girl. I can’t believe I’m so lucky. I literally drew her in a dream, and now she exists."
Stella Maxwell, May to August
After a six-month break, Stewart and the Victoria’s Secret Angel rekindled their longterm romance in May, picking up right where they left off in October 2018. And while they sure looked cozy kissing during a boat ride in Italy in July, they went in different directions soon after. However, insiders haven’t ruled out a future reconciliation due to their strong attraction and history.
Sara Dinkin, December to April
Fresh off her October 2018 breakup with live-in love Maxwell, Stewart started seeing the stylist two months later. They had been photographed out and about holding hands, taking hikes and walking their dogs. But a steamy kissing session at the Coachella Festival in April made things look serious. And perhaps they were, but she couldn’t quit Maxwell.
Stella Maxwell, December 2016 to October 2018
For nearly two years, the model was Stewart’s plus-one. They were first spotted leaving the 2016 Met Gala together and later that year, Maxwell visited Stewart on the Atlanta set of her film “Lizzie,” making it clear things were on. They amped things up the next year, reportedly moving in together — as well as crashing a same-sex wedding and dangerously committing to being each other’s Instagram girlfriend. The pair actually made things official-ish, attending a dinner together at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. However, a trip to Amsterdam in October of that year was the last time they were seen together — and their breakup was confirmed soon after.
They were a couple when Stewart called herself “so gay” on “SNL.” Stewart also told Harper's Bazaar U.K., "I've been deeply in love with everyone I've dated.” But she added that she was open to romance with men and women, explaining, “Some people know that they like grilled cheese and they’ll eat it every day for the rest of their lives. I want to try everything. If I have grilled cheese once, I’m like, ‘That was cool, what’s next?’”
St. Vincent, October 2016
Stewart and the singer (real name Annie Clark) were inseparable for a brief period in fall 2016. Clark, who had recently split with Cara Delevingne, was invited by Stewart to attend the New York Film Festival screening of her movie, “Certain Women.” They then made their public debut attending the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Show at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. It seemed serious, but it was fleeting.
Alicia Cargile, May 2016 to August 2016
The long-time couple’s on-off relationship briefly was switched back on in May 2016. That’s when Cargile accompanied Stewart to the Cannes Film Festival.
While rekindled, Stewart took the opportunity to gush about Cargile in a way that she never had during the years they dated prior. She told Elle U.K. in July that her decision “to hide [the romance] provides the implication that I'm not down with it or I'm ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I'm so much happier." She went on to say, "Right now I'm just really in love with my girlfriend," Stewart said. "We've broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like, 'Finally, I can feel again.'"
A month after that, Stewart told T magazine, "I would never talk about any of my relationships before, but once I started dating girls it seemed like there was an opportunity to represent something really positive. I still want to protect my personal life, but I don't want to seem like I'm protecting the idea, so that does sort of feel like I owe something to people."
Despite the public declarations, their romance petered out for good in August 2016.
Soko, March 2016 to May 2016
In 2016, Stewart also had a brief but high-profile fling with French singer-songwriter Soko (real name: Stéphanie Sokolinski). The women couldn’t keep their hands off each other and Soko declared herself “very, very, very in love.” But love is a fickle thing and they parted ways soon after.
Perhaps the fact that they both dated Robert Pattinson wasn’t the best thing to have in common.
Alicia Cargile, 2014 to 2015
Stewart’s relationship with her personal assistant, Cargile, first blossomed in 2014. While they were very tight-lipped about it, Stewart’s mother confirmed the romance in a tabloid interview the following year. “What’s not to be accepting about her now having a girlfriend? She’s happy,” Jules Stewart said. She went on to call Cargile a “lovely girl.”
While Stewart’s mom gave the pair her OK, Stewart and Cargile split in October 2015 — and the actress was soon spotted with a new personal assistant. Ouch.
Robert Pattinson, September 2012 to May 2013
After her affair with Rupert Sanders was exposed in the most painfully awkward way, Stewart publicly apologized to Pattinson. Against Donald Trump’s advice, Pattinson took her back a couple of months later. Although they tried to make it work, it simply no longer did and they officially ended it the following year.
With some time apart from their breakup, Pattinson told Esquire UK in 2014, “Sh**happens, you know?” in reference to Stewart’s cheating with Sanders. “It’s just young people … it’s normal! And honestly, who gives a sh**?” But he said the fallout from it didn’t help them repair their relationship. “The hardest part was talking about it afterwards,” he said. “Because when you talk about other people, it affects them in ways you can’t predict.”
Similarly, Stewart has spoken about it too, including during her Nov. 5 interview with Howard Stern. She talked about how the “slut-shaming” she faced was “absurd.” Stewart went on to reveal for the first time that she never slept with Sanders. And while things went south with Pattinson, she called him her first love and “the best.”
Rupert Sanders, circa July 2012
There were screams of horror heard around the world by Twi-hards when Us Weekly posted the exclusive photos of a super steamy makeout session between Stewart and her married “Snow White and the Huntsman” director in July 2012. Whatever they had going on — which Stewart has since said was never consummated — was quickly over after the pictures surfaced with Stewart publicly begging Pattinson to take her back. Sanders had less luck with wife Liberty Ross, who swiftly divorced him.
Robert Pattinson, 2008 to 2012
As the “Twilight” franchise began, Stewart ended her romance with Michael Angarano for her on-screen leading man. By 2009, they were openly spending time together off the clock. Twi-hards absolutely couldn’t get enough of the pair, dubbed Robsten — and their every move was tracked. That pressure on their romance made for lots of ups and downs between them. They tended to be evasive about their love — trying to keep one facet of their life private as international stardom consumed every area of their lives. But fans put pieces together based on what articles of Pattinson’s clothing Stewart was wearing — and they let their guard down here and there.
The pair was shacking up — with Stewart becoming “mom” to his dogs, Bear and Bernie, and Pattinson alluding to an engagement in the near future — when Stewart’s cheating scandal blew everything up.
