ADM football shreds Winterset, cross country goes bronze twice

It’s another successful week in the books for the Tigers. (Events covered: Sept. 3-9)

Football (2-0)

After a defensive-led effort in Week 1 turned into a win, the offense came together as well in Week 2 for ADM’s home opener for a 31-9 over Winterset (1-1).

Shouldering half of the team’s plays, quarterback Hudson Shull made his mark both through the air and on the ground with two passing touchdowns, and a goal line run that broke the plane as well. Shull got the ball in someone’s hands 15-of-20 passes, however, he and the Tigers will look to get those all into ADM’s own hands as he had two interceptions in an otherwise proficient night.

Shull completed passes to eight of his teammates, with Corbin Reed leading the way with four snags for 77 yards while Taylor Kinney and Grant Jansen found the end zone on their only receptions. Last year, the Tigers topped out at six players with a reception compared to Friday’s eight.

The wealth spread to the defense as well, as five Tigers registered a tackle for loss, led by Devin Gelhaar’s two sacks.

Competition ramps up in Week 3 with a road trip to Lewis Central (2-0) which beat the Tigers twice last season in high-scoring affairs.

Volleyball (5-3)

Following the team’s opening week tournament in Adel, the Tigers hosted yet another tournament on Sept. 5, finding three wins and two gritty losses in the process.

With all three wins coming in straight sets and nowhere close to extra points needed, ADM got the most experience with a pair of 2-1 losses to Nevada (5-0) and No. 8 Norwalk (11-5). Each resulted in the Tigers barely winning the first set, dropping the second round, and then finally losing 15-13 in the tiebreaker set. That makes the team 0-3 this season in a winner-take-all scenario.

Elsewhere, the Tigers took down Woodward-Granger, West Marshall and Gilbert in the same tournament. Even in a two-set appearance, Macy Person had a season-best nine kills against Gilbert for one of the team’s most efficient outings of the young season.

Cross Country

It was a bronze kind of day in Pella for ADM on Saturday, with the boys and girls cross country teams taking third place, helping understand where the team currently sits among the state’s best teams.

Peaking with eighth place from freshman Elliotte Von Roden (20 minutes 0 seconds), the Tigers had the fastest time run by someone not a in a Pella jersey as the Dutch earned places 1-7 for a perfect score. The closest competition came from within the Raccoon River Conference, as Gilbert placed second overall with an average time of 21:19 for a one-second advantage over ADM. Allie Eggleston placed 14th at 20:40.

Competition was more lopsided in the boys’ race, with ADM placed well-behind first place Gilbert which combined for nine of the top 15 times of the evening. ADM was afforded only one of those times, led by Torin Timmerman’s 17:09 mark.
