Blue Streaks regroup just in time to defeat Hilltoppers in D-I sectional final

Oct. 20—MADISON — To play in next week's Division I girls soccer district tournament, Madison's Reese Meister said her team just had to get back to the right mentality.

The Blue Streaks gave up a late goal in their sectional final against Chardon on Thursday night, but regained the edge for a 2-1 double overtime win at Madison High School.

Madison was less than six minutes from wrapping up a sectional title in regulation, but a charge by the Chardon offense resulted in Teagan Sprague's goal Madison keeper Taylor MacAdam to knot the match at 1-1.

Once the Blue Streaks made it to the end of regulation, it was time to regroup.

"Their goal was a moment of panic," Meister said of the equalizer. "We were up, and with just the amount of time left, we were scrambling to get it out and no one was thinking, no one was taking charge.

"They got it in and it is what it is. We had to come back with that winning mentality, and put everything out there for whatever was left in the game."

In the first overtime, Madison didn't score, but gotten its edge back by controlling the possession for most of the 15=minute session.

"I told them going into overtime that if we play not to lose, we're going to," Blue Streaks coach Chad Butler said. "You have to go out there and play like you're going to win, and take it to them, and we did that. I thought we dominated the overtime periods."

In the extra session, Madison earned a direct kick from the left of the net and a corner kick opportunity from the right. Neither produceed much in shot opportunities, but the confidence was definitely back.

"We were feeling it," said Abbey Forster, who kicked home the game winner.

Less than two minutes into the second overtime, Forster found the ball with her foot off a corner kick sent in by Sierra Sidotti, and buried the clean look for the win.

"The ball was coming towards Reese," Forster said. "Reese was coming towards it and I was able to get my foot on it and tap in. I was able to shoot it with confidence. When it went in, I was like 'Oh Yeah.'"

Butler said the girls executed the play perfectly.

"Very few people would believe me after the fact, but it was pretty much just how we threw it up," the coach said. "The Forster sisters [Sarah and Abby] are both very good on the back, so we sent Sarah to cover the back post and Abby to go in the middle.

"We had a specific target zone that we aimed for, she put it right there and Abby did her job."

The match was scoreless for the first 40 minutes. Kennedy Ross broke the drought with a goal to put her team up 1-0 with 16:38 to go in regulation, before Chardon tied it to force the overtime.

The sectional title is another add-on to what has been a special season for Madison. The Blue Streaks won the Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division championship with a record of 10-5-2 and 5-0 in CVC play.

Butler toppled the century mark in career wins, while Meister went over 50 goals for her career.

Next up, Madison will face top-seeded Walsh Jesuit at 6 p.m. on Monday night in Cuyahoga Falls in a district semifinal match.

Meister said the mindset they had in overtime will need to carry over for that game as well.

"We'll have to go in with the same mentality, knowing that it could be it," she said. "We just need to play as hard as we can and leave everything out there."
